    Can Celexa cause panic attacks?
    I’ve been on Celexa for almost two weeks now. I started with 10 mg/day and then worked up to 20 mg/day, and I’ve been having panic attacks almost every night and feel very anxious, almost borderline-panic, during the day. Is this a common side effect when first starting an antidepressant? Should I wait another week to see if it goes away?

    If it does not get better after taking it for one month tell your doctor.He will change antidepressants. It does not work for everyone.

    I think that Celexa may cause nervousness and excitement that may inhibit your sleeping pattern, and rarely hallucinations. If the side affects of the drug are impairing your function, you should talk to your doctor or psychiatrist so that they can either correct your dosage or administer another anti-depressant.

    Anxiety/panic symptoms can be a side effect. Side effects usually diminish or disappear once your body adjusts to the medication. So I would give it a little more time unless the anxiety becomes unbearable. Then you should talk to your doctor about going off it and trying a different drug. Also, antidepressants usually take two to six weeks to become fully effective. So give it time to see if it helps and if the side effects diminish.

    You might be bi-polar. Bi-polar people and those type of meds don’t mix. Talk to your doctor about this.

    I went on Celexa for a while and experienced anxiety attacks almost daily. I felt like I was about to crawl OUT OF MY SKIN. It was terrible. After a couple months, I couldn’t handle some of the other side effects and went on Lexapro, celexa’s newer cousin. Similar formulary with fewer side effects. It takes about 3 weeks for your body to get used to the medicine, so stick it out another week or so, it is a great drug for some people. Good luck.

    I would call your doctor and ask them. I have been on Celexa for 5 years now and it works great for me. Prior to going on Celexa I was on Paxil for years and I had severe panic attacks. Since being on Celexa, I am happier than ever, haven’t had a single panic attack and have lost a lot of the weight I gained on Paxil. Bottom line is this: these drugs work with everyone’s body chemistry differently. What works for one won’t work for others (Lexapro and Zoloft didn’t do a thing for me). Listen to your body and your doctor. There are many meds out there to try. Be patient and you will find the one that is right for you!
