Lifestyle and home remedies
While panic attacks and panic disorder benefit from professional treatment, you can also help manage your symptoms on your own. Some of the lifestyle and self-care steps you can take include:

Stick to your treatment plan. Facing your fears can be difficult, but treatment can help you feel like you're not a hostage in your own home.
Join a support group for people with panic attacks or anxiety disorders so that you can connect with others facing the same problems.
Avoid caffeine, alcohol and illicit drugs, all of which can trigger or worsen panic attacks.
Practice stress management and relaxation techniques. Meditation, yoga and guided imagery may be good options.
Get physically active, since aerobic activity may have a calming effect on your mood.
Get sufficient sleep — enough so that you don't feel drowsy during the day.

Maybe talking to someone like a therapist about your anxieties would help. Do things that you enjoy such as writing, drawing, reading, listening to music, writing poetry, sports, or anything to get your mind off of things. ;]

It depends on what brings them on.
If you should feel one coming on just talk to yourself( in your mind).
Saying that everything is really ok, and you can handle it.
Try to convince your mind as if you were talking to someone else.
    Control your breathing.
Make sure that it is regular so you don't start panting.
I hope this would help some.
A counselor might be able to help you.

if the medicine has side effects you don't like you can get your doc to change it till you find something your comfortable with
if it's just the idea of medication period then see therapist for depression or figure out what's causing you to be depressed and deal with it

Panic attacks thrive on fear. Your job, during the panic attack is to keep your thoughts under control. Say things like "its no big deal" etc.

If you are benzodiazapines (Xanax etc.), your body will naturally become more nervous between doseages of medication since your body is dependent on it.

I've had a lot of experience with anxiety attacks–but only one panic attack. What worked for me is the bible. I take no psych meds.
