Overcoming Panic Attacks
Panic attacks are usually progressive in nature if they are not treated properly. Many people who suffer from panic attacks go for months and years before getting the correct diagnosis. They suffer needlessly either because of a lack of education about panic attacks or due to embarrassment of having a problem they cannot seem to will themselves out of.
The symptoms of a panic attack include but are not limited to:
Difficulty breathing.
Feeling as though you are not able to get enough
Racing heartbeat.
A sense of terror or dread.
Severe anxiety level; feeling like you are on the verge of losing your mind.
Dizziness, trembling, choking.
Chest pain.
Sweating, hot flashes.
Tingling sensation.
People who have panic attacks tend to make connections between their anxiety and certain activities. This leads them to the conclusion that if they avoid the activity then they will not have the panic attack. Unfortunately this tends to gradually make their world shrink. They become comfortable with fewer and fewer experiences. They become embarrassed by their lack of control over the panic attacks and they start to avoid friends and family. They stop going to places that were once familiar. This may include the grocery store, the mall and their church. Eventually this can impede their education and/or their career. They may do the opposite and become quite needy on friends and family. Their friends and family often do not know what is going on and thus they do not give the support that is needed. These same people may also feel their own sense of helplessness as to what they should be doing to provide relief. The person with panic attacks becomes embarrassed and frustrated. They withdraw from the help that could be available. This avoidance behavior sets the stage for depression and eventual hopelessness. But please do not ever forget that Help Is Available!
I have treated thousands of cases of anxiety/panic disorder.
If you have been having panic attacks, here are some recommendations to decrease and hopefully eliminate them:
1. Immediately seek a psychiatric evaluation. You could seek a therapist first but the therapist will most likely send you to a psychiatrist anyway. Medication is the fastest way to control the panic attacks. This will decrease the anxiety so that the therapist can get to the root of the problem and teach you a variety of anxiety reducing techniques.
2. Find a therapist who is familiar with treating anxiety disorders. Not all therapists are good at helping these kinds of cases.
3. If your psychiatrist prescribes an anti-anxiety medication, please take them as recommended. Short term usage is usually required. Keep this medicine with you at all times because panic attacks can be very unpredictable.

Anxiety Panic Attacks - Stopping The Attacks Before They Start
For those of the many people who have suffered from anxiety, they know that anxiety hurts. If you are one of those many who suffer from this condition, you know first hand that this statement is true.
It’s no wonder so many people are at the brink of doing just about anything to rid themselves of the pain of panic attacks. This conditions can keep you from enjoying life and all the pleasures that life has to offer if you let it become uncontrollable.
Preventing them from starting in the first place is the best way to rid yourself of anxiety and panic attacks. These problems do not just surface out of nowhere. They are rooted from experiences that we live and think about day in and day out.
For example, before the anxiety or panic arises, try this exercise to help prevent an attack from happening. Take 5 minutes of your day and devote it only to you. Take a comfortable seat and rest your hands in your lap. Till the count of five relax and inhale deeply and slowly. Hold it in. Now, slowly and gently exhale till the count of five.
Practice taking these long, gentle breaths 4-5 times in a row. Focus on the sounds and sensations of your steady breath entering and leaving your body.
Once you have mastered your breathing technique, think of a situation in your life that causes anxiety or panic for you. When the thought enters your head and you feel the anxiety build up, tell yourself that you can handle it and move on. It may take repeating it over and over until you notice that there is zero anxiety. It will work if you believe in yourself and believe it will work.
Lets be clear about one thing, the purpose of this exercise is to keep yourself calm through thoughts that normally would stress you. Try to keep a positive head and do not dwell on the situation itself, but on overcoming the situation.
Believing that every time you come across this situation or a new one similar to it you will live through it without anxiety or panic attacks. Remember to just stay calm and relaxed and feel acceptance of the matter.
Lets examine what acceptance means. Can you feel acceptance? Yes, you can! You feel acceptance when you are in a peaceful state, devoid of struggle, based in the here and now. Being in a state of acceptance, you do not think of the future or the past. You are in the moment, completely present.
When you are in a state of acceptance, you can not resist the thing that makes you anxious. You are so in tuned to the fact that it is there and you do not care. Instead of striving to change the situation, you simply allow yourself to exist and you allow the situation to exist, and let it go. Not fighting it will allow it to go away. And, letting it go away will result in sending your anxiety panic attacks away as well.

In this country many of us have heard of mental disorders, and most of us think that only certain people become afflicted with these conditions. However this is simply not the case. Mental disorders include panic attacks, anxiety disorders and social anxieties as well.
These anxiety attacks can range from mild discomfort to debilitating agoraphobia and this is a condition that can strike anyone. Your life is going along in its normal day to day fashion when suddenly without any warning terror has you in its grip. You feel weak and helpless. Your hearts pounding and you have trouble breathing. You may even wonder if you’re having a heart attack or if youre about to die. When you finally go to see a doctor, you might even be told theres nothing physically wrong with you.
At first you are stunned by the attack asking yourself what just happened to me. You are frightened by the experience but now you realize that the fear feeling is still there. About this time you may begin to conclude that you had an anxiety or panic attack. You find yourself feeling very uncomfortable in certain social situations or physical surroundings. The worst part is that you cannot control these feelings.
You say to yourself what in the world is going on with me. What you have is the beginnings of a serious mental disorder called agoraphobia. As it develops you will find that you find more and more situations that you feel uncomfortable in and begin to avoid them. Agoraphobia has been around for a long time and its very name is rooted back to ancient history. It literally means fear of the crowded public market place.
Agoraphobia is a condition that develops gradually. In general it occurs after a panic attack. After the first attack you may subconsciously be preparing for another attack and fearing the symptoms that will leave you feeling helpless. This cycle of panic attack and impending panic attack can cause you to change your entire lifestyle just to avoid those feelings of terror. As panic attacks can occur anywhere at anytime, we generally associate the first place that we felt helpless as perhaps the reason for our anxiety attack. A routine of fear and subsequent panic attack dominates your life. People, who have suffered from PTSD associated with a traumatic event, relate this event to everyday life situations. Most of the time agoraphobia starts slow and then grows as you wait for the next attack to commence.
Anyone suffering from this condition will find that their world is closing in on them. In extreme cases the individual will confine themselves to their house or even to a single room within a home. Just discussing a trip to a public place with people will trigger a racing heart. Frequently the person begins to sweat and experience chest pains similar to a heart attack. It is not uncommon for a person suffering from agoraphobia and panic attacks to stop taking care of their physical needs. They cannot go to a public place to buy clothes or get a haircut and sometimes cannot seek medical attention because of the fear of a crowded doctors office.
It is critical for the patient to see a medical specialist that treats this disorder prior to it becoming serious. Failure to do so may prevent the individual from getting needed assistance outside of a medical inpatient facility. This is very serious and debilitating disease that affects many people. Seeking treatment early allows for more treatment options. New effective medications are available that will assist in recovery. Anxiety attacks are a serious mental condition that we all need to be aware of.

Signs And Symptoms Of Panic Attacks
Some of the most serious signs and symptoms of panic attacks can be quite frightening and at times can even lead the person experiencing the attack to believe they might be dying. It is not at all uncommon for an individual suffering from a panic attack to believe they are going crazy, losing control or about to have a heart attack due to the severity of these symptoms. One of the first steps to overcoming panic attacks; however, is learning to recognize these signs and symptoms.
In the quest to overcome these attacks, it is also important to understand the dynamics of panic attacks. For example, the presence of a panic attack itself could be an indication of the medical condition Panic Anxiety Disorder. While not all symptoms indicate the presence of an attack, there are numerous signs and symptoms that are commonly associated with panic attacks. It is important to be aware that in some cases medical ailments could produce the same signs and symptoms of a panic attack. A life threatening situation could also produce similar symptoms; although, this type of situation could also certainly precede a panic attack as well.
Panic attacks typically last about ten or less. For the person experiencing the attack this can feel like an eternity. Generally, the attack will reach its maximum intensity level within about a minute or so of the attack beginning. Over a period of about half an hour the symptoms of the attack will begin to gradually diminish. It is important to keep in mind that in some cases it could take several hours for the symptoms to completely diminish.
In some cases, panic attacks can occur as a single incidence with no recurrence. In other cases, attacks may happen more frequently; even up to several times per month. Typically, the severity of the signs and symptoms of the panic attack will vary.
Symptoms associated with panic attacks include:
Feeling extremely stressed
Experiencing a sense of paralyzing fear
Hot flashes
Sudden chills
Choking sensation
Chest pains
Tingling in the fingers or toes
A fear that you are dying or going crazy
Difficulty breathing
Feeling as though you can’t get enough air
Racing heartbeat
Feeling dizzy, lightheaded
Experiencing a feeling of dread,
Nausea
Trembling, shaking or sweating
Feeling nervous
The mere presence of one or even two or three of these symptoms does not necessarily indicate a panic attack has occurred or even that an individual suffers from Panic Disorder. As previously discussed, there could be another reasonable explanation for the presence of the symptoms, such as an entirely different medical condition.
Not all individuals suffer from the same symptoms each time they experience a panic attack. During one attack one set of symptoms may be present while another, different, set of symptoms may appear during a subsequent attack. In addition, it is likely that the severity of the signs and symptoms of panic attacks may range from one attack to the next as well.
