PostHeaderIcon How to control a panic attack?

I get panic attacks alot and I have to go to the barbers tomorrow to have my hair cut, I have not left my house for 4 weeks and when I have my hair cut I am afraid I will get a panic attack
Will taking a celexa tablet help just this once

No-it would probably do the opposite and actually increase your anxiety-you should close your eyes and take deep slow breaths so that you don’t hyperventilate-you should go ahead and see someone. Panic attacks are awful but there is help. I am on Zoloft 100 mg every day and I have not had a panic attack in the 2 years I have been on them. Good luck!

PostHeaderIcon I get anxiety and panic attacks and thinking about seeing a psychologist?

does it work?? and also has anyone done anything besides drugs that cured their attacks?? if so tell me please.I didnt start getting them until my late 20s.

Yes, seeing a psychologist can help IF your problem is because of something that needs to be dealt with mentally? For example stress of any kind? anger? hidden feelings that needs to come out? problems that needs sorting?

You don't say much about your anxiety, how bad it is, how often you get attacks? and when does it come? why?

Meditation works best. Drugs are temporary solutions only. You need to start with the root of the problem or else you will only continue to get these attacks for the rest of your life.

I threw away my drugs after a month because of the really bad side effects. Only weak people need drugs, people who can't face there fears or who gave up on themselves and needs to rely on something else to fix there problems, but don't realize its only making it worse for them.

Unless your mentally handicapped in some way, diagnosed with some mentaly disability, there should be no reason why you can't cure these attacks yourself. I did. Just research everything you can on anxiety/panic attacks. Obviously you have access to the internet, what more resources do you need? Go to the bookstore. Read everything you can on anxiety. Buy the book you're most comfortable with, easy to read, easy to follow, one you could go back to more than once.

Important tip. Once you're over these attacks. Don't take for granted they won't come back. I made the mistake of thinking they will never come back until 4 yrs later it did and i missed work for a month and a half, didn't eat for several weeks, couldn't get out of bed. It traumatized me pretty badly.

Deep breathing helps a LOT to get over these attacks. practice them everyday….for the rest of your life. Make your brain never forget how to deep breathe properly. Because you never know.

Good luck!

PostHeaderIcon is it weird to get nosebleeds during panic attacks?

I get panic attacks in my sleep sometimes and when it happens i usually shake, hyperventilate, freak out, feel smothered, throw uo and get a bleeding nose.

Is it normal for panic attacks?

It is not abnormal to get a bloody nose from panic attacks… I know this from personal experience. I have suffered from CRAZY panic attacks for about 9 years now and it is one of the hardest things to overcome. What happens to a lot of people during a panic attack is that your blood pressure raises up a great deal. High blood pressure is one of the number one causes of nose bleeds. I would imagine this is exactly what is happening to you.

Please know that there is help for your panic attacks. I had them so bad that sometimes I would forget where I was or who I was. I had out of body sensations, always felt like I was dying, thought there was something stuck in my throat, and sometimes wouldn't leave the house. I found EXTREME relief by taking Paxil. I was so opposed to meds, but let me tell ya, I wouldn't live a day without them now. Panic attacks are most always the result of a chemical imbalance and the only to fix this is to take medicine.

I hope you can get relief soon, and if you EVER need someone to talk to, I can so help you (tweetytweety2607@yahoo.com). Trust me… I've been there a million times before!

PostHeaderIcon Can kava cause panic attacks?

I recently started taking a drug called kava kava. I don't know if you are familiar with it but after taking it I started having really bad panic attacks and I continue to have the. Does anyone know if this drug causes panic attacks, and if so how long does it take for this drug to leave the body?

Never heard of it causing panic attacks. Must have been something else that triggered it, or an allergic reaction. It should leave the body completely within a couple of days

A panic attack is a sudden rush of uncomfortable physical symptoms coupled with thoughts of impending doom (making a scene, heart attack, not being able to breathe). Although the first panic attack may take place in a distinct situation, further episodes are unpredictable as to time or place.

One or more uncomfortable physical symptoms will be present in a severe form during an actual panic attack, such as increased heart rate, dizziness or lightheadedness, shortness of breath, inability to concentrate, and confusion.

After a number of panic episodes, the individual can become afraid of being a helpless victim of panic. He or she may hesitate to be alone, to venture far from home, or to be in public places. Even when not experiencing an anxiety attack, the person with panic attacks often becomes increasingly nervous and apprehensive. He or she attempts to remain physically and psychologically tense in preparation for the next attack.

Stop doing the activities that seem instinctual in the face of panic. Instead, go directly toward panic, drop your guard and let it touch you. Clearly you will be "experimenting" when you apply these inoculating attitudes. I predict that you also will become immune, which means "not affected by or responsive to" panic.
During an emergency, our breathing rate and pattern change. Instead of breathing slowly from our lower lungs, we begin to breathe rapidly and shallowly from our upper lungs. If during this time we are not physically exerting ourselves, then it can produce a phenomenon called "hyperventilation." This in turn can explain many of the uncomfortable symptoms during panic:

dizziness
shortness of breath
a lump in the throat
tingling or numbness in the hands or feet
nausea
confusion.
The good news is that by changing your breathing you can reverse these symptoms.

By shifting your breathing rate and pattern, you can stimulate the body's parasympathetic response. This is the body's equally powerful and opposite system to the Emergency Response and is often called the relaxation response.
——————————————————————————–

Natural Breathing

Gently and slowly inhale a normal amount of air through your nose, filling only your lower lungs. (Your stomach will expand while your upper chest remains still.)
Exhale easily.
Continue this gentle breathing pattern with a relaxed attitude, concentrating on filling only the lower lungs.

——————————————————————————–

Calming Breath

Take a long, slow breath in through your nose, first filling your lower lungs, then your upper lungs.
Hold your breath to the count of "three."
Exhale slowly through pursed lips, while you relax the muscles in your face, jaw, shoulders, and stomach.

Practice this Calming Breath at least ten times a day for several weeks. Use it during times of transition, between projects or whenever you want to let go of tension and begin to experience a sense of calmness. This will help you become familiar and comfortable with the process. And use it any time you begin to feel anxiety or panic building. When you need a tool to help you calm down during panic, you will be more familiar and comfortable with the process.

You may well be able to get the award!!. Use the services of your local council B.M.S (Benefit Maximisation Service) for assistance with the application pack and also a welfare rights advisor throughout the process. (Try the C.A.B.) If your application is declined DON"T give up there.Use the Appeals Service and go throught the Tribunal. If you are awarded DLA all of your due benefits will be backdated to the date of application in the end. Also DLA is what is known as a passport benefit meaning it opens you to entitlements to other benefits such as Severe Disability Premium and Carers Premium. Persevere with it because too much goes unclaimed and it is there for the purpose of easing your difficulties. In Law it is neccessary to prove that the "need for support and supervision" is present, and has been so for three months prior to applying. A lot hinges on medical reports from doctor and consultant. And remember this ….to the DLA you NEVER have such a thing as " on a good day ". Go for it ! Good Luck !!

PostHeaderIcon Why does going outside help my panic attacks?

Sometimes if I'm inside and I'm having a panic attack, I'll go outside and all the sudden the panic attack will just disappear. I figured this out because one time I was at my cousin's house and I was having an anxiety attack and things got pretty insane and she told me to go outside because she thought I was going to throw up. But I the minute I walked out the door it was like a weight off my shoulders. Why is this?

Maybe you felt better because you were able to get away from what was making you anxious. Best Wishes.
